Hundreds of Volunteers needed for…
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive
Sunday, May 11th

The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council has again been blessed with receiving all food collected from the Northbrook, Deerfield, Wheeling, Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove Post Offices during their Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday May 10. The Buffalo Grove Post Office is collecting bags of food from Buffalo Grove residents to give to the Beth Am Food Pantry

Do a Mitzvah on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 11th
No need to register.  Two ways to volunteer:

·       Pickup donated food from the Buffalo Grove Post Office at 10:30am.  Instead of going in the regular post office parking lot, turn at the driveway further northeast and you will see where to load your vehicle.  Bring the food to the Beth Am Social Hall (park on North side of building).  Stay at Beth Am to sort the food.
·       Or, volunteer at Beth Am to setup in the social hall beginning at 9:30am, and/or unload vehicles and begin sorting from 10:40am-2:00pm or any part of that time.

Can’t make it on Mother’s Day? Food sorting will continue during the week. No need to register. Please just come to the Beth Am Social Hall any of these dates/times and stay for as long as you can.
   Monday May 12th:       7:00 - 9:00pm
   Tuesday May 13th:      7:00 - 9:00pm
*Thursday May 15th:       7:00 - 9:00pm
   *Sunday May 18th:       9:00am - 12:30pm

*Please contact Debbie Cohen at deb-cohen@comcast.net <mailto:deb-cohen@comcast.net> or (847)478-9375 before coming Thursday May 15th or Sunday May 18th in case we are done by then.

Special thanks to Rochelle Greenwald, the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council, the Buffalo Grove Post Office, and all volunteers for making this collection possible.

Chicago Center for Jewish Genetic Disorders

Dr. David Rubin and the University of Chicago have designed this wonderful program on Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis specifically to address the needs of the Jewish community.  Many in our community are affected by Crohn’s and colitis and this is a great opportunity for them to learn more about these conditions and the diet modifications,

lifestyle changes, and treatment options that may benefit their health.

For more information, see the link on the home page of our website www.jewishgeneticscenter.org

Living with Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis: Why are Jews at increased risk for these conditions?  What new therapies are available?  Experts from the University of Chicago Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and from around the world will address the needs of the Jewish community and answer questions.  Sunday, June 1st, 8:30a.m. - 1:00p.m., Renaissance Hotel, Northbrook. No Charge.  Kosher breakfast and lunch served.  RSVP- Alana Bunnag (773) 834-3917. For more information, visit www.jewishgeneticscenter.org.

CFJE

Community Foundation for Jewish Education

The Community Foundation for Jewish Education of Metropolitan Chicago’s Merkaz Ivrit (Hebrew Ulpan Center),

Chicago’s largest and most popular Hebrew language learning program, is coming to Buffalo Grove this fall!

The CFJE is very pleased to respond to the many requests made by members of the community,

including congregational members, to bring this highly acclaimed program to the northwest region.

Classes will take place at the JCYS building in Buffalo Grove (1700 Weiland Road/ 847-279-0900).

Some of you may know that the CFJE’s Hebrew Ulpan Center has been running very successfully for six years in other communities,

including the North Shore, Skokie and Lakeview.

The program was developed with the adult learner in mind.

Classes are stimulating, varied and filled with many ways to learn language:  through speaking, reading, writing, exposure to Israeli culture, listening and singing.

We have students who return to us every year because they feel the program meets their high quality standards and is therefore well worth their time and energy.

We are proud to have earned their trust.

Attached please find a brochure which includes the information students will need to register:  class schedule, program levels, location, cost and CFJE contact information.

Questions?  Call the Uplan Center at 847-410-3900 x30 or yberman@cfje.org.

We look forward to serving you!

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

In mid June I am going to complete a hike to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and, myeloma and to improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
Since its founding in 1949, the Society has provided more than $550.8 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.

  - Leukemia is the leading cause of death in children under the age of 15.
 - Every 9 minutes another child is diagnosed with a blood cancer.
 - Blood cancers will strike an estimated 135,520 Americans each year and kill approximately 52,310.

My goal is to raise $7,000.

Here are 5 good reasons why I?m asking you to help others:
1)    100% of what you donate is tax deductible.
2)    100% of the aches and pains as a result of the hike are going to be mine to endure.
3)    You?ll feel good about helping others.
4)    Pledge your support now and I promise I won?t bother you again.
5)    It?s easy.  Just  follow the link to my site.
